Fort Basinger was a US Army military post and a town in Highlands County Florida. Both are gone today except for a few historical markers. WEB Fort Basinger was a bustling town in the 1800s, but it was abandoned after the Seminole Wars.
A Seat of Civilization
WEB Basinger on the okeechobee side is literally the seat of civilization since it was the first part of present-day WEB. Located on Highway 98 between Okeechobee County and Highlands County the ghost town of Basinger is a reminder of a bygone era.
A Place of History
WEB Fort Basingers original site is located approximately 35 miles 56 km west of Fort Pierce Florida along U.S. Highway 441. The heart of Okeechobee cattle country Basinger is a historic town just east of the Kissimmee River.
A Place to Visit
Today, Fort Basinger is a ghost town, but it is still a popular place to visit for history buffs and nature lovers. Visitors can explore the ruins of the old fort, hike through the surrounding forest, or fish in the nearby lake.
